NO FEWER than three pairings were taken to the fifth extra hole before they triumphed in the Daily Mail Foursomes’ second round. In the women’s event, Reading’s Tracy Crew and Charlotte Keenan had to go to the 23rd hole before beating Clare Fraser and Sumi Mitsumizo, from Bearwood Lakes. It was the second successive round in which the Reading pairing had to endure extra holes, having beaten Sarah Arnold and Ngairey (correct) Palin, from Henley across the Oxfordshire border, at the 19th in the first round. Meanwhile, in the men’s event, Stockport’s Ian Fitton and David Cox were taken to the 23rd hole by Prestbury’s Andrew Oakes and Nicholas Hargreaves, despite having been four up after four holes,, while Taunton & Pickeridge’s Rob Parker and Chris Nicholls also had to play five extra holes before closing out their match against their opponents from Axe Cliff. They will all be hoping for an easier passage through the five remaining rounds they must negotiate if they are to reach finals week, which this year will be played at the Marriott Forest of Arden in the West Midlands in October. However, all three pairings have already done enough to show that they are in this for the long haul. |
